Geek Squad was a startup in the 1990s, offering computing assistance to the less tech-savvy. The company built its identity around the image of a team of black-and-white-attired "geeks" in clip-on ties, driving to the rescue in black-and-white Volkswagen Beetles.
Since then, the company has expanded to its current workforce of more than 24,000 employees.
Stephens wrote that he would continue to assume a role within the Best Buy organization as an outside advisor to the company's CEO Brian Dunn.
The announcement comes on the same day that Apple is expected to announce the latest version of its popular iPad tablet computer, and Stephens joked on Twitter: "I've decided that I'm going to assume the role of iPad3."
