Friends Mourn For Man Killed By Police In Brooklyn Center
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Friends and family of a man shot and killed by police overnight visited the place where he died in Brooklyn Center Friday.
Friends described Dontaylo Wright as being good with kids, caring and incapable of even saying the word "hate."
Wright died Thursday night on the 5300 block of Emerson Avenue North. Brooklyn Center police say he was walking down the street, carrying a rifle with a scope.
Police say an officer was forced to shoot Wright after he failed to put down the rifle following multiple requests from police to do so. Wright died at the scene.
A witness said an officer got out of his squad car and pointed his gun at Wright.
"He was pointing at the young man, telling him to drop his weapon," the witness said.
Wright's friends said he had been drinking. It's not known why he was carrying a rifle, but his friends don't think the weapon was loaded.
Friends described Wright as a good man who went to school.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is taking over the investigation of the shooting from Brooklyn Center Police and say it's being investigated as an officer-involved shooting.
