Police: 1 Person Shot After Fight, Crash In Fridley
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police are trying to sort out what happened during a four-car crash in Fridley that ended with a shooting. Witnesses told police a man involved in the accident had a knife and tried to assault other drivers. Before police could get to the scene, a man not involved in the crash, shot the man with the knife.
The crash stopped traffic at Highway 65 and Medtronic Parkway. Witnesses said what unfolded after the cars collided was more disturbing.
"It was the back vehicle, he crashed into all the vehicles in front and he just started freaking out telling everyone to move, he was running down the road up and down," Jamie Jimenez said.
Jamie Jimenez said she felt scared as she saw the man with a knife act erratic.
"He was freaking out, like he almost assaulted a lady, he was trying to kiss her," Jimenez said.
Police report the man with the knife was involved in the crash. Witnesses told them he was attempting to assault people. Another man who saw what was happening had a gun and police say he shot the man with the knife multiple times.
"We did have a lot of people who stopped at the scene who witnessed what was going on and with one person armed with a knife attempting to assault other people on scene. It appears that some people did try to intervene. The male who was armed with the gun obviously did intervene," Fridley Police Capt. Ryan George said.
Police said the shooter stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Investigators are now trying to determine how and why this all unfolded.
"We're unsure if anyone knew each other or if it was a road rage situation that started somewhere else or if it was wrong place wrong time," George said.
Police are trying to determine if there's a connection between anyone involved in the accident. The man who was shot is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
