Fridley Apartment Building Fire Put Out By Stovetop Extinguisher
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - A Fridley kitchen fire caused about $2,000 in property damage Thursday before being put out by a stovetop extinguisher.
There were no injuries sustained in the fire in the Brandes Place apartment building at 6124 5th St NE, the Fridley Fire Department said.
The fire reached up past the vent hood fan, ate through the cabinet above the range and began to melt the plastic of two gallon-sized containers of cooking oil.
Fridley Fire Chief John Berg described the stovetop fire extinguishers as "the difference between life and death."
"It is extremely important that people do not store cooking oil above the stove," Berg said in a statement. "This had the potential to be a really bad fire."
Earlier this month, a 24-year-old woman died in a Fridley apartment building fire.
