Former U.S. Attorney To Head Pawlenty's Iowa Effort
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker will head a committee overseeing the Iowa campaign of former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Pawlenty has formed an exploratory committee to look into a run for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, and he has begun building an organization for Iowa's leadoff precinct caucuses.
In announcing the appointment Tuesday, Pawlenty noted Whitaker's experience as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Iowa from 2004 to 2009, and his success as a player on the University of Iowa football team.
Whitaker now is managing partner of a Des Moines law firm. He ran unsuccessfully for state treasurer in 2002.
