Former Duluth Minister Was Freedom Rider
DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- A former campus minister from Duluth who now lives on Madeline Island is one of the Freedom Riders featured Wednesday on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Edward Kale was arrested for breach of peace in Jackson, Miss., 50 years ago when he refused to leave a restaurant designated for blacks only.
Kale is one of 178 surviving Freedom Riders who will be featured on Winfrey's show, which is dedicated to the people who protested segregation in the Deep South in 1961. Kale ended up in a city jail, then was moved to the Mississippi State Penitentiary where he stayed a few weeks.
The Duluth News Tribune says Kale was in Yale Divinity School at the time. He served as a minister at the University of Minnesota Duluth in the 1980s and now operates Apostle Island Kayaks on Madeline Island.
