Fmr. Willmar Teacher, 34, Accused Of Having Sex With Student
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 34-year-old Ashby man is accused of having a 5-year sexual relationship with a student starting when she was 15 years old, according to the Kandiyohi County Attorney's Office.
Chad Jeffrey Akerson, a former Willmar teacher, now faces felony counts of first-, second- and third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
According to the criminal complaint, the female victim gave a statement to Willmar police on Nov. 6, 2014, saying that Akerson and she had sexual relations while she was his student at Willmar Senior High School. She said the two also know each other as family friends.
Over the course of the victim's high school career, she was a student in three of Akerson's classes and he was also her hockey coach. The charges allege that the two regularly had sex before, during and after school in various locations, including rooms inside the high school.
Akerson resigned from the Willmar School District in October 2012, but the relationship continued for two more years, until the victim was 20 years old.
If convicted, Akerson could face up to 25 years in prison for each of the first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct charges.
