First Day Of School Starts With 2 Bus Accidents
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The first day of school for thousands of students around the Twin Cities metro has started with at least two accidents involving school buses, according to authorities.
According to WCCO Radio, a bus driver was hurt in Maplewood Tuesday morning when a vehicle rear-ended a school bus at the intersection of County Road C and English Avenue. The bus driver was transported to a hospital to be treated for injuries related to neck pain.
Authorities said the school bus and vehicle were both headed eastbound on County Road C approaching a four-way stop at English Avenue when the bus stopped to pick up children and was rear-ended by the vehicle. Police said about 25 kids were on the bus at the time of the accident, but none were hurt.
The bus had its stop arm out and warning lights flashing.
The students were headed to John Glenn Middle School and were taken to school by another bus after the crash. Officials said all students on the bus made it to school safely.
Police said the driver of the vehicle was not injured in the accident, but her vehicle suffered significant damage. Authorities said she was wearing her seat belt and the airbag deployed, likely preventing serious injury. The driver told police the sun was in her eyes and she didn't realize how close she was to the bus.
Authorities in Minneapolis said there was an accident involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle at the intersection of 49th and Camden Avenues North Tuesday morning. Police said several students were on board the bus at the time of the crash, but none were hurt. The bus driver also was not hurt.
Police said the driver of the vehicle was transported to North Memorial Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. A spokesperson for Minneapolis Public Schools said the bus was not a school district bus. Authorities aren't sure which school the bus was serving.
