Fire Officials Investigating Small Explosions In Burnsville
BURNSVILLE, Minn. (WCCO) – Burnsville Fire Department officials are on the scene trying to figure out what has caused a series of small explosions underneath the street.
Authorities said the explosions started just before 3 p.m. in the area of River Hills Drive and 27th Avenue in Burnsville.
The explosions have blown some manholes into the sky, authorities said. Investigators said it is not a natural gas leak, but they are finding high levels of carbon monoxide in the area. More than 100 people in about a four block area have been evacuated, authorities said.
At least two manhole covers have been blown off and fire officials said they are worried about more explosions.
"It's a flammable gas and it can explode, and we're worried about it migrating into people's homes," said Burnsvile Fire Marshall Lee LaTourell.
Crews said they could be on the scene for several more hours because they just have to let the carbon monoxide vent. Residents with no place to go during the evacuation are being directed to the River Hills United Methodist Church, which is located at the intersection of River Hills Drive and Highway 13.
