Chief: Careless Smoking Started Hopkins Apartment Fire
HOPKINS, Minn. (WCCO) -- Authorities say no one was seriously hurt in an overnight fire in Hopkins, Minn.
The fire started around 2:30 a.m. Monday at an apartment building on Smetana Road. The Hopkins Fire Chief said the cause of the fire was determined to be careless smoking. He said the fire started in the living room.
Smoke alarms went off and woke everyone up, and a rescuer also helped get people out.
One unit sustained extensive damage, and the entire building had smoke damage.
One person was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment of minor smoke inhalation, but everyone who lives in this apartment will have to find somewhere else to live for a short while.
The Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire.
