FEMA Assessing NE Minnesota Flooding Damage
DULUTH (WCCO) -- Teams with the Federal Emergency Management Agency are heading to the Northland to begin assessing the damage from last Wednesday's historical flooding.
If there's more than $7 million in public property damage, which is likely, FEMA will pay 75 percent of the rebuilding costs. The state will come up with the rest.
Wednesday's flood washed away a good portion of the grounds and killed 14 of the Lake Superior Zoo's animals.
Over the weekend, nearly 200 volunteers made their way to the zoo to lend a hand in the cleanup this weekend.
So many people showed up Saturday, the zoo says it had to turn away some volunteers.
Just south of Duluth in Moose Lake and Barnum, the water is receding from Friday's levels.
Major roads have opened again, but some secondary roads are still closed.
Carlton County workers are going door-to-door to inspect homes. The county has also opened a volunteer and donation center in Cloquet.
People can call 218-384-1112 if they want to help or if they need help. The center will answer calls daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. You can drop off donations there, too.
