Ex-University Staffer Pleads Guilty In Computer Theft Case
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A plea agreement has been reached in the case of a former University of Minnesota employee accused of using school money to buy dozens of computers that he resold.
The Star Tribune reports that 34-year-old Michael McDaniel, of Lilydale, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft by swindle. He also pleaded guilty to a third theft charge in a separate case involving items taken from a Target store.
The plea deal calls for McDaniel to forego a 2 1/4-year prison term if he meets terms of his eight-year probation. He must serve one year in the county workhouse, although the judge may switch that to electronic home monitoring no later than six months into the sentence.
McDaniel will likely be ordered at sentencing to pay back about $134,000 to the school.
