Esme's Blog: Ann Romney And The Mommy Wars
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen may have boosted Mitt Romney's Presidential campaign more than any Republican strategist ever could.
Her attack on Ann Romney for "never having worked a day in her life" continues to create outrage. By every analysis, the 2012 presidential election will be very close. Once again it is women, who tend more than men to be swing voters, who will be likely determine the outcome. A Washington Post/ABC News poll out this week shows President Obama leading Romney by 19 points with women voters. A Fox News poll out Friday shows an eight percent lead for Obama among women.
The suggestion by Rosen that because Ann Romney has not worked outside the home makes her less able to comment on economic issues is an insult to any women who stays home instead of collecting a paycheck. More offensive, even ludicrous, is the suggestion that being a mother to five boys is somehow not "work."
Sure the Romneys with their wealth are in a position to have Ann Romney make the choice to stay home. To their credit, Obama strategists immediately condemned and distanced themselves from Rosen's comments. While those strategists outrage is genuine, there has to be political concern. As Democrats have argued that Republicans have been waging a war on women, Republicans can use Rosen's comments to argue any war is multifaceted.
