Esme Blog: The Down Side Of Target Field

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Perhaps I am the only one who has anything negative to say about Target Field.

It is a gorgeous design with impeccable sight lines, with every seat a decent one. Whether it's the steamy heat of August or the crisp feel of September, and dare we say October, it is a baseball experience as great as any big league park.

What's the problem? The problem is that it is impossible to get tickets. Whatever you say about the dingy bubble of the Metrodome you could get nearly always get in. For $8, you could get a stair-step workout that allowed you to sit and eat a hot dog and watch the specs of players below. Yes, the experience was lacking, but at least you were there and for cheap.

According to Team Marketing Report, the average price of a Twins ticket rose 45 percent to $31.47 this season. The Chicago Cubs are the most expensive ticket in baseball at $52.56 and the Arizona Diamond Backs are the lowest at just $14.31.

As the Twins cruise to the playoffs, with most experts giving them a shot to go to the World Series, fewer Minnesotans will be able to enjoy the ride in person. It's not just that Target field has 15,000 fewer seats than the Dome. It has 20,000 fewer upper deck seats. Target field is a gem, but it is a gem that is no longer accessible to fans who for years have been able to enjoy a big league experience with their families for less than a price of a movie ticket.
