East Coast Storm Strands Buses With 200 Minn. Teens In Pennsylvania
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- This weekend's winter storm is dropping record snow in major cities in the northeast -- shutting down New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.
Hundreds of drivers were stranded overnight on Interstate 75 in south-central Kentucky. Towns along the New Jersey shore saw coastal flooding through the streets.
Vehicles also came to a halt on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Friday night. Some people are still stranded -- including several buses of students from the Twin Cities.
A group of 200 teenagers from the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis traveled to Washington, D.C. this week for an anti-abortion rally, according to Burnsville resident Liz Wilson -- the mother of two of the teens.
They have been stuck on the turnpike since 8 p.m. Friday night. Late Saturday evening, they were able to hit the road again and started back towards Minnesota.
Kiera Wilson is from Burnsville. She was stranded on a bus 90 miles east of Pittsburgh.
"I'm getting a little bored," she told WCCO over the phone. "I had a lot of homework to do, but it's getting sweaty, and all we've been eating is chips and granola bars."
Wilson said the group was able to get off the turnpike at around 8 p.m. Saturday -- almost exactly 24 hours since they stopped. She said they'll keep driving until they make it back to St. Paul.
