Eagan Coach Charged With Swindling Nearly $30K
HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) -- An Eagan coach has been charged with six felony counts for allegedly swindling Independent School District 196 of nearly $30,000.
According to the criminal complaint filed in Dakota County, 50-year-old Kurt Bruce Virgin worked as a coach for two basketball camps and one soccer camp each summer.
The District 196 secondary education director contacted police after becoming concerned about how Virgin was running the programs.
According to the criminal complaint, Virgin was running the summer camps in a manner that had registration fees being paid to him, rather than the school district. At the same time, he was allegedly still running the programs to be hosted by the school district.
According to the secondary education director, this meant that Virgin was receiving free facility rental fees, in addition to increasing his salary and pension.
The criminal complaint also says that Virgin only turned on part of the funds raised by the teams' sales of cookie dough and discount coupon booklets.
Between 2009 and 2011, Virgin allegedly swindled about $16,500 from the registration fees and another $12,500 from skimming off the fundraising profits.
He is now charged with six counts of theft by swindle. Each carries a maximum penalty of 5 or 10 years in prison and between $10,000 and $20,000 in fines, upon conviction.
