MINNEAPOLIS — The U.S. Olympic Team Trials start Thursday evening at Target Center, bringing thousands of gymnasts and fans from across the country and world to the Twin Cities.

If you don't have tickets to see some of the country's greatest gymnasts compete for a spot, there are still plenty of ways to get in on all the festivities.

A kick-off celebration was held on Thursday on Nicollet Mall with a synchronized performance in the street by 1,000 gymnasts who had spent weeks practicing in their home gyms.

"Shane Wiskus is from Mini Hops, and he's competing for the men's USA Olympic team, so we're supporting him," said Mary Carey.

She was with gymnasts from Plymouth's Mini Hops Special Olympics team.

Another family from San Diego was hoping to run into Simone Biles.

"She's really good at gymnastics and she's like a role model," said Paige.

Through Sunday, Nicollet Mall will be transformed into the Promenade Du Nord, a Parisian street fair featuring over 60 vendors, outdoor dining, music and more.

"This is super exciting, so much energy, so much is going on, this is really cool," vendor Jason Reub said.

For many visitors, it's their first time in Minneapolis. For some, it's their first time visiting the United States.

"I think everyone is really, really, friendly and helpful so thank you," said a mother from Australia.
