'It Shouldn't Have Happened': Family Reeling After Woman Seriously Injured In Crash
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The husband of a woman seriously hurt in a head-on crash says he's never going to leave her side.
The crash happened last Friday in the west metro. Minnetonka police began chasing a speeding vehicle that did not stop. After calling off the chase, the vehicle crashed head-on with another car in Hopkins.
Reg Chapman has more on how an innocent driver's family is dealing with the sudden trauma.
"This is her third surgery since Friday afternoon. I guess I would call it critical at this point," said Scott Webster.
Scott Webster, his daughters Kalee and Cody have not left the bedside of his wife Karen, since she was involved in a horrific accident last week.
"She picked up my daughter's dog, had her in the car with her and somewhere along the trip this all happened," Webster said.
Karen was driving her "Grand Dog" Ronnie to spend the weekend at the family house.
Investigators say police were chasing a car driven by David Baxter. They lost sight of the vehicle only to come upon a two-vehicle crash on Minnetonka Boulevard.
Baxter hit the Volvo Karen was driving head on. Baxter and the 2 year-old golden retriever did not survive the crash.
"Then you just kind of look up and you go, why? It shouldn't have happened. One in a million chance, you know, wrong place at the wrong time. It just makes no sense, it doesn't make sense for anybody on any side and yet it happened," Webster said.
Flowers and balloons mark the spot where the accident happened. Scott says it hasn't all sunk in yet, he's on autopilot.
"I've basically resigned to the fact that this is my full-time job and we've been married 38 years and I expect another 38 years helping her," Webster said.
Scott says he is overwhelmed at the amount of support shown by people from all over.
He says he is directing all that positive energy towards Karen.
Doctors tell the family she will need care for quite a long time if not life-long care.
Scott says he hasn't had that big cry yet, he says the comments people put on social media help him smile through the pain.
The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with the cost of medical bills.
