Doctor: 80 Million Americans 'At Risk' For Diabetes
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Diabetes now affects nearly 26 million people in the United States, up 2 million in two years.
If you're thinking this doesn't affect you as there's no history of diabetes in your family, you may want to think again.
Diabetes EXPO co-chair Dr. Kevin Peterson visited WCCO-TV studios Friday morning to talk with Natalie Kane about how anyone can develop diabetes, and more importantly how to prevent it. You can watch their conversation in the video above.
Peterson said beyond the 26 million who are currently affected by diabetes in America, there are also 80 million who are considered "at risk."
The best ways to lower your risk for developing diabetes are exercise, a healthy diet and managing your weight, Peterson said.
The one type of food Peterson suggests people target for reduction in their diets: carbohydrates.
"Our diet is filled with carbohydrates. We could sure cut back on them," he said.
There is a free diabetes expo that takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Click here for more information.
