DNR: Wildfire Burns 900 Acres In Northern Minn.
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A wildfire is still burning in northern Minnesota after it left 900 acres and one structure charred Sunday, authorities said.
Jean Goad, a DNR information officer, said the fire started near Nimrod, Minn., and burned grass, swampland and some conifer trees.
The Wadena County Sheriff's Office said Lyons State Forest is burning. Police said the fire boundaries are:
County Road 9 on the north
County Road 7 on the south
County Road 26 on the west
and County Road 7 on the east.
The fire destroyed one structure, which may have been a home. However, police say no injuries have been reported.
Authorities have evacuated homes, although the number of people evacuated is not known.
Sunday's strong winds have diminished, and this will help crews fight the fire.
But according to Goad, Monday's weather forecast shows a change in wind direction. This change might spell trouble for crews. She also said the fire crossed County Road 9 in the north, causing concern for structures in the area.
During the day, three helicopters and three CL-215 water-scooping airplanes fought the fire with coordinated water drops. But as night fell, the water drops stopped.
At one point, the fire was three-miles wide, Goad said.
DNR ground crews and county firefighters are continuing to fight and monitor the flames.
