DNR To Present Mille Lacs Fish Diet Study

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Fisheries officials will give a presentation in Aitkin about a study of what fish eat in Mille Lacs Lake, and how much food is consumed by predator fish in the popular east-central Minnesota lake.

Wednesday night's event is part of a series by the Department of Natural Resources that's intended to share biological information and answer citizen questions on the ecology and management of Mille Lacs. It starts at 7 p.m. at the Wealthwood Gun Club in Aitkin.

The walleye population in Mille Lacs has been declining because the vast majority of walleye that hatch there haven't been surviving to their second autumn in recent years. However, the DNR said Monday that for the first time since 2008, the survival of younger walleyes appears to be improving.
