DNR: Spring Burning Restrictions Start This Week
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Burn restrictions start this week in several parts of the state as we approach the start of the wildfire season, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Burn restrictions will start Wednesday in several counties in northwestern, southern and central Minnesota. It will also start in other parts of Minnesota in April.
The restrictions mean the DNR is not allowing the open burning of brush or yard waste. DNR officials said it's an especially dangerous time of the year as most wildfires occur in April and May. Officials said with winter snow melting, exposed dead grass and brush can start on fire quickly.
DNR officials said the restrictions will be in effect until green vegetation can form, which is typically four to six weeks.
Many Minnesota counties and towns also have their own burning regulations, so it's important to check with local authorities and get permits if you plan to burn anything.
DNR officials said burning restrictions do not apply to campfires. Those are legal, but people should still be careful and leave an open area around the campfire. You'll also want to make sure you put it out when done and ensure it's cold to the touch before leaving it.
