DNR: Inspect Your Boat Before Hitting The Water
MNNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- With warmer weather finally looking like it might be here to stay for a while, there are things the Minnesota DNR would like you to know before getting into the water.
DNR officials would like to remind everyone to inspect their boats and equipment and to also review rules that are in the 2015 Minnesota Boating Guide. One thing that is required on your boat is a horn or whistle to alert boaters of your location.
Also, life jackets are required for every person on board, and a fire extinguisher. DNR officials say safety is paramount.
"And we want to see everyone wearing life jackets whether they are adults or children, but the law is under 10 years old, children need to be wearing life jackets unless the watercraft is being used as a swimming platform or is tied to a dock," Adam Block with the DNR said.
The DNR says it's important to take extra precautions this time of year with the water still being cold. More than 30 percent of the state's boating fatalities take place during the cold water season.
