Rep. Ilhan Omar Holds Immigration Forum Amidst Affair Allegations
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A divorce filing submitted to the Superior Court of D.C. Tuesday claims that a man ended his relationship with his wife after declaring his love for Rep. Ilhan Omar.
The divorce filing concerns Beth Mynett and Timothy Mynett, both of Washington, D.C.
Part of the filing states that the married couple physically separated in early April when Timothy Mynett told Beth Mynett that he was romantically involved, and in love, with Omar.
According to the court filing, he met Omar, who is a U.S. Representative from Minnesota, while working for her.
The court filing further states that Beth Mynett still loved him and was willing to fight for the marriage, but he said it wasn't an option for him.
According to the divorce filing, Timothy Mynett runs a political consulting business called E Street Group Consulting. Federal Election Commission filings show Omar's campaign has paid that group more than $220,000 for services starting in August 2018. There is a scheduled hearing for the matter on Oct. 7 in Washington, D.C.
Tuesday night's immigration forum, hosted by Rep. Ilhan Omar, was organized to address issues at our country's southern border. But the new cloud of controversy hung over the community event.
On Tuesday, WCCO reporter Esme Murphy asked Omar whether she is separated from her husband. Omar responded that she is not, and said she would not comment further on personal matters. She insists she isn't focusing on the negative headlines.
"I have three beautiful, little children and a family to care for … so for me, my focus is doing the work that I feel I was destined to do," said Omar.
Support for the Congresswoman doesn't appear to be wavering either. Those who attended the forum say they believe in Omar and can relate to her story.
"She understands immigration. She's an immigrant herself. She comes from a family of immigrants, too," said Elvia Huitron of Minneapolis.
Omar is hosting a series of events in Minnesota this week. The next is a Food Justice Roundtable on Wednesday in north Minneapolis.
