'Divine Intervention'? Edina Football Wins Lake Conference
EDINA, Minn. (WCCO) -- In the last four weeks, Edina has beaten Minnetonka, Hopkins, Wayzata and Eden Prairie.
The Hornets have it going on.
"It's divine intervention," Edina head coach Reed Boltmann said. "And I think there's something special with this group of guys. Some kind of magic."
They have talent on this team, including a lanky quarterback who understands the game and how to get to the end zone.
"I always try to make a play for our team to succeed," said quarterback Mark Handberg.
They ran the table against the league's heavyweights, starting with an overtime win over Minnetonka – doing it as an underdog.
"A lot of people didn't even know (how good we are)," defensive tackle Deon Dorvil said. "Some in our own town didn't know. They underestimated us. We showed them wrong."
They moved on and beat Wayzata by three points -- two giants up, two down.
Then they took down the defending state champs -- unbeaten Eden Prairie -- for a final statement.
"With all the tradition and the noise at Eden Prairie, you got to believe you can play on that field, and make that play," Boltmann said.
This school has a name for hockey. And so the statement is not just to the opponents, it's an internal exclamation.
"It helps out everybody's confidence and we deserve to be the best team in the state right now -- not just hockey, football, too," said wide receiver Marley Allison.
Says Dorvil, "We're not going to settle for Lake Conference champions. We're going to shoot for the stars, and a state championship."
