Distilleries Can't Keep Up With Whiskey Demand

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Ten years ago, it seemed everyone was drinking vodka. Now, whiskey is all the rage. But the popularity comes with a price.

From scotch to bourbon, whiskey has become a hip drink again and people want the good stuff. Prices for aged whiskey are up over the past few years and some of the rarest bottles have quadrupled in value.

Supplies are limited because distilleries didn't see this popularity boom coming. Whiskey needs to be aged in barrels for years and distillers did not fill enough of them in previous decades.

Distilleries have ramped up whiskey production to try and meet demand, but it could be a while before prices start to come down.
