Discrimination Claim Filed Against University Of Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A complaint has been filed against the University of Minnesota that alleges gender discrimination in intercollegiate athletics.
The university says in a statement that a complaint was filed with the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights.
The university says a letter indicates the civil rights office is conducting "a broad full-scale review of our program in virtually all relevant areas."
School officials did not elaborate on specific allegations in the complaint.
Officials say the university had proactively retained a gender equity consultant to review athletics department practices, and many coaches, staff and student athletes were interviewed last summer. That review was recommended by the University Senate's Advisory Committee on Athletics Subcommittee on Gender Equity.
The review is ongoing and results are expected to be made public this spring.
