DeRusha Eats: Share Our Strength Cakewalk
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Homemade hostess snowballs?
Donuts topped with cherry cola glaze?
All the city's top pastry chefs are at the Share Our Strength Cakewalk -- a fundraiser to fight childhood hunger.
"No kid in this country should be going hungry," said Michelle Gayer, of the Salty Tart. "Why not celebrate the great amazing pastry chefs we have in town with this great party?"
Gayer started the Cakewalk last year and now lucky donors will take home one of these cakes, including one of Michelle's creations.
Diane Yang is the pastry chef at La Belle Vie, and she's known for inventive, intense small tastes of dessert.
"Oh it's a lot of work to do a lot of this," she said. "It took a week to get to today."
Share Our Strength says 16 million kids live in homes that struggle to put food on the table -- that's 1 in 5.
"I just think no kid should ever go hungry," Yang said. "I love doing stuff for charity like this."
Money raised Saturday night will go to help connect low-income kids with healthy food.
Anne Rucker owns Bogart Loves Bakery, and she sells at Kingfield Farmers Market.
"Brioche donuts with a cherry cola glaze -- it sounds gross, but it works," she said.
A fundraiser like the cakewalk gives food lovers a chance to get up close with their favorite chefs, and ask questions. And a chance to raise money to help make our community a better place.
