DeRusha Eats: Candy For Adults
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- You could get candy corn, at Sugar Sugar in the Kingfield Neighborhood of Minneapolis.
But why would you?
Mademoiselle Miel's honey bon-bons don't get much more local.
"The honey comes from apiaries on rooftops," said Minnesota Monthly's Senior Editor Rachel Hutton. "Theres one in the W Hotel as well as downtown."
The chocolate is 99 percent dark -- black chocolate. You get them plain, or smoked.
The taste is as complex as a smoky glass of scotch.
"These are sweet jewels caramels made by two sisters with a culinary background," Hutton said. "They do a plain caramel, but also a flavored one that's a beer and pretzel."
The beer and pretzels are local. The flavor is really cool.
"I think sweet/savory is really popular as a flavor profile," Hutton. "You're seeing a lot of sea salt in things, and that's present in a lot of these candies, too."
Minneapolis chocolate maven B.T. McElrath is most known for the Salty Dog Chocolate Bar. But don't miss his new Buttered Toast Bar.
"He takes sourdough breadcrumbs from Rustica Bakery and toasts them in creamery butter, so it's kind of like Nestle Crunch, but better," Hutton said.
Craftmade Toffee's St. Paul maker initials every bag, and it tastes almost like caramel corn.
