Deadly Weekend On Lakes Has Authorities Urging Caution
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Another deadly weekend on Minnesota lakes has authorities urging caution.
The search will resume Monday morning for the latest apparent drowning victim, a boater who disappeared on Centerville Lake on Sunday.
When the weather gets warm, you may want to head to a beach lake or pool to stay cool. We've all heard the warning to wear the life jacket, especially on boats. But the problem is, many times people don't follow that advice.
That's what happened Sunday on Centerville Lake. Authorities said two people were in a canoe someone flipped it, sending both into the water. One person was rescued, the other man never resurfaced.
Last year from spring until fall, there were 58 boating accidents and drownings. In June, there have been nine drownings reported, one of which happened last Thursday.
Kennedy Maddox, 20, never resurfaced after jumping off a boat in Lake Minnetonka. His family remembered him yesterday with a fundraiser in his honor.
"What we're trying to do here is just celebrate all of the good things that he did do, remember that and keep it with us in our hearts and move past that," said Michaela Stratton, a family friend. "It could happen to anybody's family and we all just have to be a lot more careful on the lake and just watch out for each other."
It should be another busy week on Minnesota lakes with the Fourth of July holiday in the middle of the week and many people taking the whole week off.
