Dayton, Bachmann Pursue New St. Croix Bridge
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- More people are getting involved in the push for a new bridge across the St. Croix River.
Both Gov. Mark Dayton and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann are said to be pursuing the issue.
Dayton plans on touring the Lift Bridge in Stillwater in April.
He said all proposals for a new bridge over the river are open for discussion. The current proposal for a new bridge was squashed when the National Parks Service ruled that the bridge would harm the river's recreational and scenic values.
Dayton said the problem is three federal agencies, all claiming jurisdiction, who can't agree on how Minnesota and Wisconsin can proceed.
Meanwhile, Bachmann has introduced a bill in Congress that would exempt a new bridge from federal law.
Since the current bridge proposal was stopped in federal court it needs a congressional act to be resurrected.
A hearing is scheduled in March.
