Cyclist Stuck By LRT In South Minneapolis Dies
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- For the second day in a row, a light rail train has been involved in a fatal crash.
Metro Transit officials say a man was struck by a Blue Line train just before 7 a.m. Friday morning at 46th Street and Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis.
Witnesses say the man appeared to have ignored warning signals and rode onto the tracks. He later died at Hennepin County Medical Center.
A Green Line train hit and killed a woman in St. Paul Thursday just before noon. Witnesses said 67-year-old Nurto Abdi Aden tried to run across the tracks on University Avenue near Hamline Avenue.
Metro Transit General Manager Brian Lamb released a statement Friday regarding the accidents.
"In light of these unfortunate incidents along our METRO light rail lines in the last week, we want to express our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of those most affected," Lamb wrote. "As we wait for the final details of these investigations to surface, we are reminded to take a moment and embrace the loved ones which guide our daily work and activities. May they and our care for them help to guide all of us in our daily actions."
It was the 11th time a Green Line train struck a pedestrian -- and the third fatality -- since it opened in June of 2014.
