Crews Test For Asian Carp In 3 Minnesota Rivers
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- Tests are underway in three Minnesota rivers to check for the invasion of Asian carp.
Crews from the National Park Service and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources are taking water samples from the Mississippi River to see if Asian carp have spread this far upstream.
They're sampling 225 different spots in the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers and 50 spots in the Minnesota River. These spots have not been tested before.
The water sampling process involves taking a liter of water from each location, filtering it and analyzing it for the presence of DNA left by two species of invasive Asian carp -- silver and bighead.
In June, there were positive tests for the presence of silver carp in the St. Croix River about 50 miles upstream from the river's mouth.
Test results should be back by mid-October.
