Crews Put Hastings Bridge Into Place
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The bridge spanning the Mississippi River on Highway 61 in Hastings was put into place over the weekend.
Officials said it took eight barges to move what will be the longest free-standing arch bridge in North America. Work will continue on the bridge, and all four lanes of traffic are expected to be back open by next December.
The bridge will open to limited traffic at 1 p.m. Monday, 17 hours ahead of the expected opening time. Highway 61 in the area was closed early Saturday morning for the float-in and lift of the main span of the new bridge. River traffic also will re-open between Lock and Damn No. 2 and the CP Railroad Bridge.
