Historic Building Ablaze In Downtown Minneapolis; Workers Rescued From Roof
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say nobody was hurt in a building fire in downtown Minneapolis Thursday morning, but workers had to be rescued from a roof.
Fire crews were called to the 500 block of 2nd St. at about 7:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, heavy black smoke was showing on the eighth floor of a 10-story structure and crews entered to fight the fire inside. The building is near the intersection of 2nd Street and Portland Avenue.
Firefighters had the blazed knocked down quickly, but remained on scene checking for any people inside the building and hot spots. Authorities said nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire, but workers had escaped to the roof of the building.
Fire officials said two workers who were not injured were taken off the roof. Nobody was injured in the fire and crews remain on the scene clearing out smoke in the area. Fire crews have the area blocked off to traffic.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire officials said an inspection of the building was done on Sept. 15 and there were no code violations reported.
