Cretin-Derham Hall Football Player Dies In Eagan Rollover
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's been a day of shock and sadness for one of the elite high school football programs in Minnesota. One of the starters for Cretin-Derham Hall, 16-year-old Max Lowell, was killed overnight in a rollover crash in Eagan.
Max Lowell spent his final night hanging out with some of his favorite people, his teammates. But at some point on his drive home, he lost control and was ejected from his car. He died at the scene.
Teammate Jake Lacina considered Lowell to be his best friend.
"I got the call from the pastor and it just stopped the world to me. I just didn't know what to do. I just stopped there and started crying," Jake Lacina said.
Lacina's dad, Corbin Lacina, is a former Viking who coaches the sophomores at Cretin-Derham Hall. He says Max was active in his church and dedicated to football.
"Very hard worker, weight room guy," Corbin Lacina said. "I would say the strongest guy on the team as a junior."
On Monday morning, there will be an all-school prayer service at Cretin-Derham Hall and counselors will be available.
Investigators can't say yet what caused the crash.
When asked if Lowel seemed to be impaired in any way, the Lacinas said they really don't know what happened.
