Crashes Prompt More Warning Signs On I-94 In Wis.
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WCCO) -- Following a number of recent crashes, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is posting more warning signs along a stretch of highway under construction.
The decision comes days after two teenagers -- 17-year-old Joshua Jacob Goodrich and 16-year-old Jordan Michael Johnson -- were killed in a rear-end collision with a semi truck near Hudson, Wis.
Goodrich and Johnson were riding with two others when their Dodge Durango rear-ended a semi-truck that was stopped in heavy traffic on eastbound I-94 Monday afternoon.
There was also another crash this week in Dunn County.
"Rear-end collisions are the most frequent type of crash in a work zone," says Jeff Frenette, commander with the WisDOT Northwest Region State Patrol. "Motorists need to be prepared to slow down and/or stop in work zones. That means keeping your eyes on the road at all times."
WisDOT said they plan to post additional signage to warn of potential backups in both the east and westbound lanes.
Authorities said the State Patrol will also increase enforcement in St. Croix County.
Crews are working to create a temporary four-lane road configuration for traffic to use during construction, but until then, they hope the signs and enforcement will prevent further crashes.
