Crash On Mayfly-Covered Hastings Bridge
HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) -- Investigators are looking into a head-on crash that happened on the Hastings Bridge late Sunday evening.
Authorities said the crash happened along the bridge -- Highway 61 -- in Hastings just before midnight. It appears part of the bridge was covered with a layer of bugs several inches thick.
Part of the bridge was closed Monday morning while crews worked to clean up the mess. Officials said usually they turn off the lights on the bridge to avoid attracting the insects.
A WCCO-TV photographer noted the presence of many dead insects, which gave off an overpowering smell.
Officials said there were no serious injuries in the two-vehicle crash.
