Costa Concordia Captain Sentenced To 16 Years
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The captain of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship will be spending 16 years in an Italian prison.
Francesco Schettino was convicted of manslaughter in the deaths of 32 passengers and crew members.
The ship ran aground near Italy in January 2012.
Two of the passengers killed were Jerry and Barbara Heil from White Bear Lake.
Prosecutors called the captain a "reckless idiot."
Schettino says he was being sacrificed to safeguard the economic interests of his employer.
