Cops: 'Suspicious Substance' Found In Envelope; 1 Treated
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities are investigating after a suspicious substance was found Thursday afternoon in an envelope at a Wells Fargo building in Shoreview. One person was exposed to the substance and is being evaluated.
The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office said its deputies were sent to the Wells Fargo Shoreview Operations Center on 1801 Park View Drive at about 2:30 p.m. A hazardous materials team as well as fire and medical crews also responded to the scene.
When emergency crews arrived, they found that 500 people had safely evacuated the building and that management had sealed off the area where the envelope had been opened, the sheriff's office said.
The one person who had possible contact with the substance was treated at the scene and later brought to the Hennepin County Medical Center for further evaluation. The person, who was not named, did not show immediate signs of adverse symptoms.
The substance was sent to the Minnesota Department of Health laboratory for testing. The test results have yet to be completed, and they could come as early as Friday.
The sheriff's office said state and federal agencies know of the incident, and that the neighborhood isn't suspected to be in any danger.
A Wells Fargo spokesperson said Thursday night that the building has reopened except for one, small, unnamed section.
The incident is still under investigation, and more information should be available Friday.
