Coon Rapids Woman Allegedly Stole More Than $100K From Employer
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Coon Rapids woman has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from her company since October of 2012.
Tara Jo Luby, 41, is facing one count of theft by swindle for an amount over $35,000.
According to the criminal complaint, officers responded to a report of theft at the Boiler Services located in the 10300 block of Flanders Street Northeast in Blaine.
Upon arrival, officers learned that an employee, later identified as Luby, had been writing checks from the company's bank accounts and depositing them into her own accounts.
Luby, who had been employed by Boiler Services for 14 years, had access to the business accounts as she was in charge of paying bills as part of her office work.
Police said the other office worker had discovered discrepancies in the billing.
According to the criminal complaint, these discrepancies occurred when Luby would issue the checks written from the business account into her personal bank account and falsify the information entered into the check register.
Police said the thefts had been occurring from Oct. 2012 through April 2014.
In total, Luby stole $109,398.80 from the company.
Luby wrote an additional check for $11,500 for her account but the company was able to stop payment before it was deposited.
According to the criminal complaint, Luby admitted in a statement that she had taken the money. She said she had a gambling problem and began taking the money to pay off debt she accrued due to gambling.
