Coon Rapids Athlete Injured In Pa. Bus Crash Out Of ICU
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - A Coon Rapids woman was moved out of the intensive care unit Monday after surviving a bus crash that killed two people and an unborn baby.
The Seton Hill University's lacrosse team was driving along a Pennsylvania highway when it went off the road and hit a tree Saturday.
Amanda Michalski was one of the 23 on board. Her coach, who was pregnant, and the bus driver died in the accident. Amanda suffered a broken arm and a lacerated liver.
The news was tough to take for Anne Moelk and the Minnesota Lacrosse community. For the last two years, Moelk coached Michalski and the Minnesota Lakers elite lacrosse team.
She said Amanda came to an open tryout for the Minnesota Lakers and impressed coaches with her hard work and skill.
"She always had a smile on her face no matter what you were doing, no matter what you were talking about - she was smiling," she said.
Her attitude and smile were infectious, establishing her as a leader on and off the field.
"She ended up being one of our captains for her team that year. A great leader," she said. "Her teammates looked up to her for sure."
Now they are expressing their love and support on social media for the young woman who has a passion for life and the game of lacrosse.
Amanda also played for Coon Rapids High School, where she was the first all-conference lacrosse player at the school.
Investigators are still looking into what caused the crash.
