Cook County Attorney Fired After Conviction
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted to remove Tim Scannell as county attorney Thursday morning.
Last week, Scannell was convicted of sexual misconduct with a teenager. A jury found him guilty on charges stemming from his relationship with a girl who was 17-years-old at the time.
Scannell admitted on the stand that he loved the girl, but he says nothing sexual happened. The girl's family sought a restraining order against Scannell in 2012.
According to reports from the CBS affiliate in Duluth, Scannell is an elected official, however a lawyer for the county board called this a legal move.
His termination was post-dated to reflect the day of his conviction -- July 25.
Scannell faces a prison term of possibly several years. Sentencing has been set for Sept. 26.
