Convicted Wis. Councilman Resigns His Seat
WHITEWATER, Wis. (AP) -- A Whitewater councilman who pleaded guilty to a felony charge of delivering marijuana has resigned his seat.
Twenty-two-year-old Javonni M. Butler of New Berlin was convicted Friday. Prosecutors say he twice sold drugs to an undercover informant.
He was sentenced to 45 days in jail and two years on probation.
A message left with his public defender Saturday afternoon was not immediately returned.
A Janesville Gazette report says he was re-elected to the city council earlier this year as a write-in candidate.
He had no choice but to give up his council seat. The state Government Accountability Board says anyone convicted of a felony is prohibited from holding office. He won't be able to run again until the felony charge is expunged from his record.
