Como Zoo Polar Bear Recoups After Surgery
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – Como Park Zoo's 23-year-old female polar bear, Berlin, has made a strong recovery after undergoing major surgery at the University of Minnesota's Veterinary Medical Center.
According to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory Director Michelle Furrer, Berlin is recovering from surgery that removed a necrotic mass that caused internal bleeding. She's been cleared to return to the zoo's exhibit with Buzz and Neil – her twin sons.
Berlin was originally at the Lake Superior Zoo, but her exhibit was flooded during the summer.
"We're monitoring Berlin's behavior and working very closely with veterinarians at the University of Minnesota and zookeepers at Lake Superior Zoo to ensure she receives the best possible care," Furrer said. "Berlin has a lot of fans in Minnesota, especially since her adventures this summer. We are thrilled with the progress she is making in her recovery and excited to celebrate her 23rd birthday next month."
While wild polar bears can live for 15 to 18 years, bears in captivity can live as long as 30 years.
