Community Spotlight: Maple Grove Lends A Helping Hand
MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) -- At 0-3 the Maple Grove football team isn't off to the most ideal start.
But sometimes growing as a team and as individuals means more than winning or losing.
"We are trying really hard. We need to believe before we can finish, believe we can win," said senior linebacker Andy Siedschlag.
During the second day of fall camp, the team went to Feed My Starving Children and packed more than 44,000 meals for children in Africa. It's enough to feed 121 children one meal per day for one year.
"You can tell the kids really bought into it. It was a chance to roll up their sleeves and help some people out," said Coach Matt Lombardi.
"All year in school you learn about the Horn of Africa and what's going on there. It was fun. It was good for us to help," said senior safety Dylan Steman.
It was the second year the team has helped out. The two-year drought in the Horn of Africa has their full attention. While they grow as a team, they are also growing as individuals.
"We are fortunate enough in Maple Grove to have things others don't. We help out as much as we can," said Siedschlag.
By helping out, the Maple Grove football team is this week's High School Sports Rally Community Spotlight winner. They received a check for $500, courtesy of WCCO-TV and Sieben Grose Von Holtum and Carey.
The team said it plans on doing the same thing next year.
