Class 1A Girls Hockey: Warriors 5, South St. Paul 1
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Warroad exploded for five goals in the third period, the go-ahead score coming from Kayla Gardner, lifting the Warriors past South St. Paul 5-1 for their second straight Class 1A girl's hockey state championship.
Karly Sylvester assisted on the goal by Gardner, who knocked in her own rebound on the power play Saturday. Layla Marvin tied the score early in the third period, the goal allowed following a video review.
Marvin scored on an empty-netter late in the game to give her a tournament-best seven goals. Lisa Marvin and Lynn Astrup also scored for the Warriors (27-3-0), who outshot the Packers 31-11 at the Xcel Energy Center. South St. Paul got solid goaltending from Katie Felton and held a 1-0 lead on a second-period goal by Abby Palmquist. It was the only goal allowed in the tournament by Warroad's Shelby Amsley-Benzie.
Warroad outscored its opponents 21-1 in the three games of the tournament. South St. Paul (24-6-0) was trying for its fifth state championship in the 17-year history of the girl's hockey state tournament. The Packers' last title was in 2006 when they beat Warroad 3-2 in overtime.
