City Council Talks Reopening Nicollet Avenue At Lake Street
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Minneapolis City Council Committee will talk Tuesday about reopening Nicollet Avenue at Lake Street.
It's an idea that's been talked about for years. Officials said that part of Nicollet Avenue has been closed since the 1970s.
A big K-mart store blocks drivers from going straight through on Nicollet Avenue, which can be frustrating for motorists. And neighbors have complained that the blockage has broken up their neighborhood.
Plans are still in the early stages to possibly move K-mart to another spot in this same area. There's even talk of possibly having street cars running along Nicollet Avenue some day.
There is a working group looking into how this could all happen, and it's that working group that is going to give an update to the City's Community Development Committee Tuesday afternoon.
There's a chance that planning costs could be worked into next year's budget. That means this is a ways out, but the plan is gaining some momentum.
