Church, NAACP Members Looking For Ways To Curb Mpls. Shootings, Violence
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Some church and NAACP members say they want to try something new to curb shootings and gang related activity in Minneapolis.
The organizers say they want to hold a dialogue with at least 600 black men from Minneapolis at Greater Friendship Baptist Church within the next month.
They want put a stop to what they say is an increasing level of retaliation toward family members and bystanders.
They pointed to examples like the shooting at 400 Soundbar nightclub last month that sent nine people to the hospital.
A woman who has lived in North Minneapolis for 11 years says someone shot into her home several times recently and she doesn't know why.
"The individuals doing this, I don't know who they are. They keep coming back to my home. We're innocent. We don't bother anyone. And it's just so sad that people in the community are turning their heads to this. We need people to start speaking up; we need people to start caring. We need people to stop being scared because I am a parent. I'm a person that could have lost four people that night," Yolanda Pierce, North Minneapolis resident, said.
The group says one way to help stop crime is to make sure people are not afraid to come forward with helpful information.
