Charges: Man Found Passed Out In Car With Crying Child
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 27-year-old man is facing drunk driving charges after he was found asleep over the weekend outside a Burnsville hotel in a car with a small child crying in the back.
Anthony Michael Leewaye, of Wayzata, is charged with two felony counts of driving while impaired, according to documents filed in Dakota County.
Since he has three prior DWI convictions, he faces one count for driving while impaired and another for driving while impaired with a blood-alcohol concentration higher than .08.
According to a criminal complaint, Leewaye was arrested Saturday morning. Police found him in a hotel parking lot after staff called saying a man was passed out in a car with a 7-year-old child inside.
After paramedics were able to wake Leewaye up, they checked him to see if he suffered from a medical issue. Their conclusion, however, was that he was intoxicated.
When police spoke with him, Leewaye said he'd been up drinking wine with friends in Cambridge, which is an hour's drive north of Bursville.
Sometime in the early morning hours, Leewaye said he drove down from Cambridge with the child in his car, the complaint states. He said he couldn't get into the hotel where he and his friends were staying, so he went into his car to wait for them.
The next thing he remembered was paramedics waking him up.
The criminal complaint says Leewaye didn't perform well in field sobriety tests and that he blew a .09 later in a breath test.
If convicted of both DWI charges, Leewaye could face a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and/or a $28,000 fine.
